Course content
Problems: image x text; conventionality x naturalness of an image symbol; intentionality of painting x cauality of a photograph. The problem of perception and view - historical, cultural and ideological conditions. Topics: Ernst Gombrich - imaging as a relation between conventionalism and naturalness. Nelson Goodman - conventionalism of imaging and problems concerning an iconic symbol. Michel Foucault - the semantic paradox of the relation between the visual and the verbal. Erwin Panofsky - the structure of meanings of an image; the relation between iconology and semiotics. Roger Scruton - the relation between representation and intentionality. The methodological definition of a visual culture; the place of visual studios within the humanities and social disciplines.

Learning outcomes
Issues: image x text, conventionality x nature of image sign (pictogram), intentionality of painting x causality of photography. The problem of perception and view, historical, cultural and ideological conditioning. Topics: Ernst Gombrich portraying as a relationship of conventionalism and nature. Nelson Goodman Conventionalism of displaying and problematisation of an iconic sign. Michel Foucault semantic paradox of the relationship between visual and verbal. Erwin Panofsky semantic structures of the image, the relationship of iconology and semiotics. Roger Scruton relationship between representation and intentionality. Methodological definition of visual culture, instead of visual studies within the humanities and social disciplines.
To be aware of relations between art history and visual culture.
