Learning outcomes
In the explanatory part, the course focuses on grasping some problems of artistic operation. Mainly, the practical process of public presentation of works of art, but also a wider social context, is characterised. In the practical part, emphasis is placed on model realization of a fictitious exhibition project. Topics: Introduction, the role of the exhibition in cultural operations, basic aspects of an exhibition, exhibit and artifact, contemporary cultural policy, key models of cultural policy, assigning an authorial project. Content and intention of an art exhibition. Theme and selection of exhibits, types of exhibitions according to its theme. Purpose and reasons for exhibition activities (cultural and economic). Intention and annotation. Intention and demands for its fulfilment. Mapping of the existing gallery operation. Stereotypes of visual art presentations in the Czech Republic before and after 1989. Subjects of art exhibitions. Exhibition organizer. Author of an exhibition. Role of a curator. Architect. Catalogue redactor. Graphic designer. Exhibition project and project cycle. Gallery profile. Gallery and social context. Atypical non-gallery presentations: site specific, performance, street art. Elements of exhibition realization. Intersection of aspects - factual, temporal, spatial, information, legal and economic. Fund-raising of art projects and public benefits. Factual aspects - exhibits and exhibition catalogue in a narrow sense, catalogue data; exhibition catalogue in a broad sense, its content (official speeches, thanks, professional texts, literature and list of exhibitions, catalogue of works, pictorial part, registers, sponsors). Time horizon - schedule, main dates, network diagram. Spatial horizon - venue, architectural design, lighting, installation, maintenance. Information aspect. Public relations. Mass media Press release, press materials. Legal and contractual aspects. Building a collection. Economic aspect. Expenses. Revenue items. Presentation of a model curatorial project structure.
