Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is (1) understanding of settlements as a result of the organization of society in the environment, (2) understanding of the processes and mechanisms of formation and transformation of settlement structures and (3) understanding of current transformations of cities in the context of post-socialist transformations and the globalizing world. Emphasis is placed on the perception of settlements as (1) places in the wider global and societal space and (2) internally structured and differentiated space composed of a plurality of diverse, but mutually integrated places. Topics: 1. The essence of cities and urban way of life. Generative power of cities: external positions, agglomeration ties and spatial organization 2. City space: from Chicago to Los Angeles. Transformation of cities and paradigmatic shift in approaches to urban study on the example of the Chicago School of Social Ecology and the Los Angeles School of Critical Social Sciences 3. Globalization and urban restructuring. Globalization and its impact on urban change. Processes and localities of urban changes 4. Whose city? People, capital and neoliberalism. The power of capital and uneven territorial development 5. Social construction of the city, the image of the city, perception and representation. Behavioural approaches, perception of urban environment and mental (subjective) image (map, portrait) of the city. Discourse and discursive practices, representation of place and space 6. Spatial organization of the city and urban region. City and metropolitan region 7. Transformation of post socialist cities 8. Localities of dynamic changes of the inner city 9. Suburbanization and reorganization of the metropolitan region 10. Social spatial structure of the city and segregation of social groups. Social differences, social inequality and socio-spatial structure of the city. Residential differentiation and segregation The main competencies acquired are: (1) an integral and interdisciplinary understanding of the complexity and interdependence of settlements, their objective foundations and a variety of subjective interpretations, (2) the ability to positively analyze local transformations in our cities and their neighborhoods in the context of globalization and to critically evaluate current urban trends and to try to propose solutions to the identified problems.
