Course content
Lecture: 1) Oncology, incidence and epidemiology of cancer, cancer etiology, prevention, malignant neoplasm screening 2) Biological behavior of malignant tumors, classification, diagnostics, principles of treatment 3) Radiology: imaging methods, specifics of surgical treatment 4) Medication treatment 5) Radiation treatment, the role of nurses, psychological approach to cancer patients 6) Palliative and hospice care, main goals, role of nurse, pain treatment, nutrition 7) Organization of palliative and hospice care in the Czech Republic, care for the dying, psychology in palliative care and spiritual aspects Exercises: 1) Palliative and hospice care, nurse's role, development in the Czech Republic, legislation 2) Nursing care focused on the most common symptoms in palliative care 3) Nursing process in a patient with cancer pain 4) Nursing process in the patient in the most common oncological diseases

Learning outcomes
The course introduces the principles of primary and secondary prevention, the problems of late diagnosis of cancer, classification, examination methods in oncology, overview of complex cancer therapy, dispensary care and screening programs. The aim is to use selected theories and nursing models in oncological nursing. The subject is closely related to the issue of cancer patients. It acquaints students with new services and types of facilities that fall within the field of tertiary care, where individual nursing care is provided to terminally ill and dying patients.
The students will acknowledge themselves with the informations acording to the goal and the matter of the course.

Preconditions are frased in the annotation of the course and in the curriculum of the studying programme.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam

Credit: - 80% participation in exercises, - colloquium, Exam: - oral exam.
