Course content
Lectures: 1) History of palliative care, basic terminology; development of new tertiary care services 2) Terminology: dying, death, preparation for death, life after life, euthanasia 3) Hospice and its integration into the health care system, types of hospice care; diagnostic groups of clients 4) The needs of the dying and their loved ones; spiritual care 5) Personnel management in the provision of hospice care Exercises: 1) Clinical conditions in hospice care; human reaction in individual stages of dying 2) Biological needs care; care focused on psychosocial needs of terminally ill patients 3) Nursing process for terminally ill patient; pain management (type and form of pain); prevention of burnout in hospice care providers; relaxation techniques

Learning outcomes
The course is designed as a theoretical-practical unit. It is part of a complex of subjects from clinical nursing. It acquaints students with comprehensive, active and quality-oriented multidisciplinary care provided to a patient suffering from an incurable disease at an advanced or end-stage stage. It emphasizes the specifics of nursing care focused on dignity in the care of terminally ill and dying people and their quality of life. It focuses on all-round effective support for the relatives and friends of the dying.
Students obtain knowledge in given course in accordance with requirements and course programme.

Preconditions are frased in the annotation of the course and in the curriculum of the studying programme.

Assessment methods and criteria
Presentation of acquired knowledge via paper

Classified credit: - 80% attendance at seminars, - seminar paper on the topic, - defense of seminar paper.
