Course content
Lectures: 1) Introduction to public health. 2) Historical remarks on the development of medicine and public health; definition and interpretation of terms health, illness 3) Ethical aspects of health; definition of primary, secondary, tertiary health care; historical and current role of prevention and primary care in the health care of the population 4) Health determinants, their nature, dynamics and validity; methods of assessing the health status of the population; health indicators of the population in the Czech Republic, dynamics of development and comparison of these parameters on the European and world scale; health statistics and informatics, application in public health, basic statistical methods and their use; National Health Information System 5) Health care legislation of the Czech Republic in the context of the constitutional and legal system of the Czech Republic and the EU legal system; legal status of health care institutions (MO), insurance companies, professional organizations (chambers), professional societies, providers and health professionals as individuals in the Czech healthcare system; the main legal standards currently in force in the health sector; selected problems of health insurance and special sections of health law, data protection in health care 6) Health policy, definition of health systems, interpretation of terms, objectives and strategies and instruments of health policy, development of European and world health policy; World Health Organization (WHO), WHO programs 7) WHO European strategies for the 21st century; health policy in the Czech Republic, development, current situation and perspectives, comparison in the EU context 8) Health care economy and health care financing, general principles of economy in health care, description of basic health systems in terms of financing; description of health care financing in the Czech Republic; drug policy and its application 9) Management of medical facilities; characteristics of basic types of healthcare facilities providing health care; primary care facilities as an essential tool for influencing the health of the population; basic links of health and social care 10) Regional health policy; overview of the regional health system; basic importance, role and basic organizational chart of regional hospital; emergency medical services (RZP, LZS), pre-hospital health care 11) Management of medical facilities; professional and hospital care facilities; information technologies, information systems as tools for management of medical facilities, expert information systems and support of clinical activities 12) Health education, specific aspects of postgraduate education and training, the system of health education and training in the Czech Republic; education (training), science and research in health care in the Czech Republic in the context of EU and international programs 13) Hygiene and epidemiology, explanation of basic concepts, description of basic environmental factors affecting health, risk assessment in the working environment, organization and tasks of the health service in the system of health care, occupational diseases 14) Monitoring the quality and safety of healthcare provided; accreditation, certification of medical facilities

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of the course unit The aim of the course is to explain and introduce the area of public health and its importance in influencing the health state of the population, influencing the individual health and their interdependence. At the same time, the aim is also to explain the role of healthcare and health professionals in this area and the need for cross-sectoral cooperation.
Students obtain knowledge in given course in accordance with requirements and course programme.
Prerequisites
Preconditions are frased in the annotation of the course and in the curriculum of the studying programme.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined examination, Written exam, Didactic test

Classified credit: - self-study, - 80% participation in classes, - written test and oral examination.
