Course content
1. Language classification. Roots of English. History of writing. 2. Old English. 3. Middle English. 4. Medieval manuscripts. 5. Early Modern English. 6. Modern English irregularities.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on basic notions connected with language changes and the phases of the development of the English language. Students have an opportunity to learn about the processes operating in English at various periods of its development, as well as read extracts from various periods of the language development and compare similarities and differences between the oldest texts and present-day ones.
The knowledge of the gradual change of the English language and the historical events which influenced it.

C1 level of English

Assessment methods and criteria
Student's performance analysis, Practical demonstration of acquired skills, Systematické pozorování studenta, Oral presentation of self-study, Presentation of student research activity, Written assignment, Test

Students are required to collect at least 70% of points in order to obtain the credit. The points can be received for HOME ASSIGNMENTS (there will not be any retakes, or extensions of deadlines), and for a TEST conducted after the course ends. The test will be scheduled at STAG. Students who will have missed the date will have the opportunity to write the test during the resit. There will be no extra date scheduled. Students who will not obtain 70% of points will write a RESIT TEST covering the whole semester. To obtain the credit, they should receive at least 70% of points (collectively: for home assignments done during the semester and the retake test). Only one retake will be allowed.
