The aim of the course is to introduce students to discourse analysis as a linguistic discipline and the various approaches used within it. Discourse is defined here as the organization of language above the sentence level, as well as any manifestation of language in context. The seminar provides a general overview of the phenomena involved in the study of discourse and later moves on to the approach of different schools to these problems. The main sources describing the approaches of individual schools will be supplemented with other materials focused on the practical analysis of both spoken and written discourse. Students will learn to collect and analyze their own data through assignments.
