Learning outcomes |
The course places particular emphasis on the ways in which we negotiate awareness and engagement in relation to media representations of climate, conflict and migration to and from specific geographical locations within and outside the EU. To this end, the course seeks to focus on cultural narratives of visibility and invisibility (in fiction, art, media and critical discourse) of deprivation, altered ecological conditions, practices of exclusion, the emergence of systemic violence, territorial aggression etc. and other forms of social and cultural anxieties related to conflict, climate and migration. Skills acquired will include critical engagement and mastery of concepts, challenges and central issues across different platforms of the cultural spectrum (i.e. print and screen media, political documentaries, fiction and non-fiction representations). Students will gain practical experience in mapping ways in which the relationships between these factors can be addressed at both local and international levels. The materials studied and explored will include documentary realism (action films); fiction (literary and moving image media from feature films to television); social media (with a particular emphasis on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram).
