In this course, students will be guided through a set of phonological experiments that will provide them with practical experience in sound production and perception. The main part of the course will consist of case studies and training in the methods of experimental approaches to phonology. This will include a brief review of speech articulation, acoustics and perception, and an introduction to some classic experimental methods and their application in relation to phonological questions. The course will be of relevance to both the theory and practice of phonology, as experiments provide a formal way to test various claims ? one of which may be the ?null hypothesis? ? on the basis of evidence that is collected in a way that eliminates the bias or influence of the experimenter, and can be replicated by others. The practical practice of experimental phonology is aimed at both mastering key types of annotation and becoming familiar with basic acoustic analysis software (Praat, Wavesurfer). The practical experiments that we conduct with students in this course will deepen their understanding of phonetics and phonological theory.
