Course content
Content: 1. Language classification. Roots of English. 2. (Old) English and its contact with Latin. 3. Scandinavian influence on early English. 4. Borrowing from French in (Middle) English. 5. Effects of borrowing on Modern English lexicon. 6. Minor sources of English lexicon. 7. Multilingualism, diglossia. Language contact. (Language phenomena resulting from multilingualism: pidgins, creoles). 8. English as a global language. 9. Lingua franca. 10. The process of borrowing. Types of borrowings. 11. Assimilation of foreign elements. 12. Code-switching. Code-mixing. 13. Language transfer. Interference. (cognates, false friends, language acquisition) 14. Miscellaneous issues.

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on the basic notions connected with language contact. Students have an opportunity to learn about such processes as borrowing, code-switching, code-mixing, assimilation, etc. They learn about various forms of language influence and different types of borrowings (direct loans, calques, loan blends, semantic loans) as well as pseudo-borrowings. The course deals with (i) foreign influences on English and (ii) English influence on other languages.
After completing the course the student has mastered the rudiments related to language contact.
Prerequisites
The knowledge of the English Language at threshold C1 level, the skill of reading at Level C1.

The course ends with a credit. Students will be evaluated on the basis of the following components: - 50% - test(s) - 40% - home assignments - 10% - attendance Students should collect at least 70% of points in order to get the final signature.
