Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the environment (both physical and cultural) of contemporary television production and to reassess the position of television in contemporary culture. Students will be introduced to current trends in serial television production (e.g. quality, planning, adaptation, serialization, televisuality, stream wars, multiplatform storytelling, production value, flow, viewership practices, fandom, binge-watching, etc.) and at the same time gain in-depth knowledge of the cultural, political and economic specificities of this industry. Students will also become familiar with the most important formats and genres of television in a transnational context. Students will gain insights into the distinct features related to the history and current influence of television (e.g.: information bias, political neutrality, value production, intermediality, etc.) and the ways in which the spread of streaming services (such as Netflix and other forms of on-demand services) is changing the image and concept of television in the 21st century.
