The course covers the basic principles of hydrobiology relating to the composition (biotic and abiotic components), properties, types, and functions of freshwater and marine ecosystems. The course deals with the relationships between organisms and their environment and between organisms themselves. It covers the characteristics of standing waters (lakes, reservoirs, ponds, etc.) and flowing waters (streams, rivers) and the basic characteristics of typical or ecologically significant organisms that inhabit individual biotopes. The course also covers information on applied limnology, focusing in particular on water pollution issues (acidification and eutrophication, civilization-specific pollutants in water, algal blooms, etc.). Practical exercises focus on basic hydrobiological methods.
