Bacteria and Archaea. Important and interesting species. 4. Molecular biology of microorganisms. Basic principles. Central dogma. 5. Prokaryotic and eukaryotic genome. From DNA to proteins. Reproduction of viruses including bacteriophages. 6. Yeast. Cell structure, taxonomy, reproduction, importance in the ecosystem and for humans. Pathogenic yeasts. 7. Microscopic fungi. Characteristics, taxonomy, reproduction, importance in the ecosystem and for humans. Pathogenic fungi. 8. Microbial metabolisms - basic metabolic pathways of aerobic and anaerobic organisms, types of metabolisms based on energy and carbon sources. 9. Microbial metabolisms - fermentation, lactic acid fermentation and resulting metabolites. 10. Microbial metabolisms - aerobic and anaerobic respiration, chemolithotrophic bacteria. Metabolites. 11. Human microbiome. Composition, characterization, influence on immunity, nervous and digestive systems. Important representatives. 12. Environmental microbiology. Extreme habitats. Importance of microorganisms. 13. Biofilms: formation, architecture, resistance, quorum sensing and control mechanisms. As part of the laboratory exercise, students will learn various ways of inoculating bacteria, they will get acquainted with ways of culturing bacteria, including microbiological media, they will learn staining and immersion observation of bacteria, they will get acquainted with soil microflora, microorganisms in air, water and skin. They will learn to cultivate selected strains of fungi.
