Course content
Part 1: General toxicology Basic concepts. Xenobiotics. Absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of chemicals in the human body. Biotransformation reactions. Mechanisms of action of chemicals on the organism. Relationship between dose and toxicity. Estimation of physical properties and toxicity from structure. QSAR method. Lipinski's rules. Risk assessment of toxic effects of chemicals. Basic toxicokinetic principles. Therapy of poisoning, antidotes. Part 2: Special Toxicology Selected inorganic pollutants and waste disposal. Selected organic pollutants and waste disposal. Radioactive substances, biotoxins. Examples of hazardous substances in the environment. Exposure limits. Psychotropic substances, drugs. Classification of drugs according to effect. Chemical warfare agents (CWAs), history, distribution, representatives of CWA groups. Part 3: Health and safety at work in the chemical laboratory Safety at work in the chemical laboratory. Protective equipment. Fire fighting procedure. Waste disposal, First aid for injuries and poisoning in the chemical laboratory. Occupational health and safety legislation. Handling, classification, labelling and packaging of chemical substances and mixtures. Principles of searching for and assessing occupational hazards. Measures for accident prevention and management. Sources of information on hazardous properties of substances and protection against them.

Learning outcomes
Master: Operational safety in chemical laboratory, estimation of properties from chemicals structure. Dealing with chemicals, their storing and labeling. Caustics, combustible and toxic compounds as a source of hazard. First aid after injury or poisoning. The possibilities of the origin of fire in chemical laboratories and fire precautions. Dangerous chemicals in the environment.
The learner will explain the basic concepts of chemical hazard and exposure as determinants of chemical toxicity. Describe the pathways and mechanisms of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of chemicals in the human body. Explain the relationship between dose and effect of a xenobiotic. Critically interpret toxicological information from a variety of sources to assess hazards and risks to human health. Estimate the physical and toxicological properties of a common chemical compound. Explain rules for the safe handling of chemicals. Evaluate the safety of the workplace with hazardous substances. (Study field Nanotechnology and Chemistry only)

Combined examination, Presentation of group work, Oral presentation of self-study, Test

Active participation in lessons (group tests, etc.). Preparation of a seminar paper demonstrating mastery of the PubChem database and a molecular modelling assignment (only for nanomaterials and chemistry majors).
