Course content
1. Ekfrazis or, in other words, the description of a work of art. Establishment of a fact in understanding. Understanding itself subsequently established by the context. The context is that which we understand primarily. Hermeneutical circle and facts. 2. Various types of positivism: an explanation on the Greek temple with reference to Hypolitus Tainus. 3. Sources of the history of architecture: reports, excavations, buildings, drawings, models, descriptions. Chronology of sources. 4. The problem of constructions, which we will never visit or, in other words, whether foreignness can be experienced from a reproduction. The atmosphere of a place. Example: Egyptian pyramids, Mayan art. 5. Landscape and place: Comparison of the Venetian and Tuscany architecture according to Theodor Hetzer. Explanation on the position of Rome according to Norberg Schultz. 6. Comparison of a Chinese temple and a Greek temple according to Dagobert Frey. 7. Architecture, painting and script; inscriptions in Egyptian tombs as a speaking library. 8. An inscription and its place. The arch of triumph; steles. 9. A drawing on a Greek temple. The history of architectonic drawing and model. 10. A verbal definition of a temple instead of a drawing or, in other words, word and construction. 11. Vitruvius and Hérodotos. What historiá is; the message of the treatise by Vitruvius. 12. A drawing and a Gothic smelting plant. 13. Constructions outside Europe and the definition of architecture.

Learning outcomes
The subject acquaints with the earliest periods in ancient architecture (megalithic constructions, Egyptian architecture, the architecture of the Aegean and Mycenaean cultures, Hittite architecture, the architecture of Mesopotamia, the architecture of Biblical lands) not only from professional viewpoint (materials, construction, function, artistic solution, links between artistic styles), but also from viewpoint of the development of society.
Elementary knowledge of art and architecture for technically-focused audience.
