Course content
Lectures (topics): A. International trade in theoretical context 1. Theory of international trade. 2. Domestic, foreign, and international trade; cross-border and national concepts of international trade. 3. Economies of scale, competitiveness, and international trade. 4. Macroeconomics of an open economy, importance of international trade. 5. Tariffs, quotas, and other barriers to international trade, state trade policy. 6. The process of removing barriers to international trade. B. Exchange rates and the international monetary system 7. The foreign exchange market and its equilibrium, nominal exchange rate, real exchange rate, effective exchange rate. 8. The law of one price, purchasing power parity, interest rate parity, exchange rate regimes. 9. Gold standard, Bretton Woods and post-Bretton Woods systems. 10. Position of the European Monetary System. C. External economic transactions from the perspective of the balance of payments. 11. Structure of the balance of payments, balance of payments accounting, foreign debt. 12. Balance of payments adjustment mechanisms Seminars (topics): 1. Theory of international trade. 2. Domestic, foreign, and international trade, movement of production factors. 3. Economies of scale, competitiveness, and international trade. 4. Economic policy in an open economy. 5. Tariffs and other barriers to international trade. 6. Foreign exchange market, nominal exchange rate, real exchange rate, effective exchange rate. 7. Exchange rate regimes, purchasing power parity, interest rate parity. 8. International monetary systems. 9. Balance of payments accounting. 10. Balance of payments adjustment processes.
