Topics of seminars: Physics of dielectrics, electromechanical properties of solids - piezoelectricity, pyroelectricity, ferroelectricity. Fundamentals of crystallographic description, tenzorial properties, equations of state for piezoelectric effect. Piezoelectric materials, their properties, propery measurement. Main applications of piezoelectric effect in transducers, resonators and actuators - gas ignitors, beepers, unimorphs, bimorphs, ultrasound generators, piezoelectric transformers, liquid atomization, ultrasonic cleaning and welding. Electrooptic phenomena, Pockels and Kerr effect, measurement of electro-optic coefficients. Application of electrooptic phenomena, intensity modulators, phase modulators. Nanooptics, physical principles and their application, near-field microskopy, nanosensors, quantum dots, optical nanofibers, nanomodulators. Capillary phenomena and Ising model. Motivation introduction: new technology of probe production from nanofiber web, theory of individual fiber and parallel fiber boundle wetting, Ising model, application of Ising model for the simulation of liquid interaction with nanofiber web of complicated morphology. Cellular automata. Finite automat, life game, HPP and FHP lattice model of hydrodynamics, collision rules, types of lattices and their symmetry, example of liquid flow modeling through channel and porous material (using cellular automat). Fundamentals of physics of anisotropic medium, physical property description of single-crystals by the tensorial calculus. Basic methods of single-crystal growth and their most imporstant applications. Magnetic materials and their properties - structure and properties of permanent magnets, ferrites, neodymium and samarium-cobalt, alnico and plastic magnets, force holding magnets on the surface, visualisation of magnetic fields for permanent magnets. Shape memory materials and their properties - intermetalic, martensitic transformation, superelasticity, NITINOL, applications, experiments.
