Course content
Thematic areas: 1. The position of Czechia in Europe and the world: the historical development of the territory in terms of its borders and administrative organisation, broader relations and SWOT of the territory. 2. Regionalisation of the Czech Republic, its importance, and characteristics of the regions. 3. Settlement and population of the Czech regions. 4. Geographical aspects of the Czech economy and transport. 5. International and supra-regional integration groupings. 6. Geology and relief of the Czech Republic as significant conditions for the natural and social environment. Soils. 7. Hydrogeography of the Czech Republic: water streams, reservoirs and groundwater, typology and regionalisation. Sources of fresh water. Impact of climate change on water resources in urban and rural landscapes. The water protection. 8. Climate and climate change in the Czech Republic as part of environmental risks. Climate characteristics and data sources for monitoring them. Climate extremes and climate change adaptation strategies. 9. Environmental status and protection in the Czech Republic: indicators of environmental quality, data sources and information. Nature and landscape protection as part of indicators and measures.

Learning outcomes
The course characterizes the conditions of Czechia, focusing on the geology, relief, climate, water, soils and biota, socio-economic characteristics, and the living environment. Emphasis is on the mutual influence of individual components and the effects on the quality of the environment. The cross-border connections with neighbourhood regions are discussed too. Attention is paid to geographical aspects of current topics of environmental and social environment changes.

fundamentals of physical, human and regional geography, cartography and GIS

Assessment methods and criteria
Written exam, Presentation of group work, Oral presentation of self-study

Students will know and understand Czech spatial reality: public administration, physical and cultural landscapes, regions, economy and society, policies and culture. In the term paper, students will demonstrate their ability to geographically analyse the natural and social conditions of a selected border administrative region. By solving the semestral project, the student will strengthen the following capabilities and skills: - apply the SWOT method to a geographical region, - analyse the broader spatial relations of the region, - examine the status and potential of European grant policy for the development of the border regions, - explore the environmental risks of the region, - formulate a professional geographical text containing spatial analysis and synthesis, - work with sources of data and information, use them in a professionally correct and ethical manner, - use the creation of thematic maps as a means of understanding and expressing the spatial patterns of the region, - organise teamwork.
