Course content
1. Introduction. Historiography of Carpathian Ruthenia. The so-called Uherská Rus (Hungarian Ruthenia) before 1914. Economy, social and religious conditions, ethnic composition. 2. Uherská Rus during World War I. Czechoslovak resistance and Uherská Rus. The role of American Rusyns. Carpahian Ruthenia at the end of WW I. 3. Dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the beginning of national councils in Carpathian Ruthenia. Russian, Ukrainian and Hungarian orientation of the councils. Carpatho-Rutheanian question at the Paris Peace Conference. Central Ruthenian National Council. Annexation of Carpathian Ruthenia to Czechoslovakia . 4. Political development of Carpathian Ruthenia. Political parties. Elections. Administrative division. Problem of autonomy of Carpathian Ruthenia. 5. Economic development of Carpathian Ruthenia. Industry, agriculture, forestry. Land reform. Building of infrastructure. 6. Cultural development of Carpathian Ruthenia. Nationality questions. Question of language. Conflicts between Russian, Ukrainian and Ruthenian orientation. Religion and religious problems. Conflict between Greek Catholic and Orthodox church. Development of education and schools. 7. Carpathian Ruthenia in 1938, the rise of autonomism. Autonomy and the first government of Andrej Bródy. VIenna arbitrary award and annexation of Southen part of Carpathian Ruthenia to Hungary. Contitutional Law on Autonomy of Carpathian Ruthenia. Victory of ukrainofiles. Augustin Vološyn´s government. Carpathian Ukraine. The end of the Second Czecho-Slovak republic. Declartion of independence of Carpathian Ukraine. Subcarpathian Ruthenia in the USSR and in independent Ukraine. The legacy of the Czechoslovak period in the region.

Learning outcomes
The lecture contemplates the history of the Carpatho-Ukraine during the 1918-1945 period.
Students will learn about the development of the Czech and Czechoslovakian international politics after the First world war and the Cold war.
Prerequisites
Fulfilment of previous study obligations, knowledge of Czechoslovak history.

Assessment methods and criteria
Student's performance analysis

Active attendance on discussions (lessons); fulfilment of homework; study of recommended literature. Every student must read at least three books dealing with the topic (it is possible to read also other books than those on the list) and must write a short essay.
