Course content
Abstract: The History of Culture of the 19th and 20 century, a part history of art, students learn about certain aspects of Czech art, architecture and decorative arts of the period in the Central European context. In the seminars students will demonstrate acquired knowledge mainly in surviving artefacts in the region. In the second part of the subject "History of Culture in the 19th and 20 century, students will be acquainted with certain aspects of the visual arts, architecture, applied arts and cultural events of that period in Western Europe, the United States and Russia (Soviet Union. Themes of lectures: 01) Czech landscape-painting, the emergence of the Academy of Fine Arts and activities of the particular studios during the 19 century 02) Historicism as a reception of styles, the influence of Vienna urban conceptio on the development of Gründer architecture in Austria-Hungary 03) The beginnings of modern art, ths -isms at the turn of the 19th and 20th century 04) Establishment of abstraction and its infiltration into Czech art 05) Wiener Werkstätte, Artel, a cooperative work - infiltration of art into everyday life 06) Post-war development of the arts, sorela, Art in the service of state 07) Action art and its development in the second half of the 20th and in the 21 century 08) The beginnings of modern art and modern culture: "the great isms" at the turn of the 19th and 20th century in Western Europe 09) Inter-war avant-garde art in Western Europe, USA and USSR - 1920s 10) Inter-war avant-garde art in Western Europe, USA and USSR - 1930s 11) The birth of postwar popular culture in Western Europe and United States of America - 1950s 12) "Golden Sixties": Western Culture in Western Europe and the United States of America in the 1960s 13) Changes of culture in Western Europe and United States of America from the 1970s until 1990s 14) World film in the 20th century

Learning outcomes
The subject deals with history of Czech culture in the nineteenth and twentieth century in the World and Europian context. The goal is a deeper familiarity with both the development of the art in that period and the role of culture in the development of social structures, i.e. the relationships with contemporary societies. Particular attention will focus on the historical relationship of culture and value systems, morals, politics and living conditions.

Prerequisites
Fulfilment of previous study obligations, basic knowledge of history, culture and terminology.

Oral exam
