Course content
|
Lectures: 1) Who are the texts written by historians for? Writing about the past and theories of fictional worlds. 2) Linguistic structure in the form of narrative prose or Where did the author go? 3) Is there a professional code of ethics for historiographers? Metahistory or author's self-consciousness. 4) Discourse of history and its (auto) reference. Possible worlds of historiography. Death of narrative Vs. the art of storytelling? Narrative, image and pitfalls of terminology 5) Writing about history before the birth of historiography as a science: a desolate imagination? Mythical, social and other functions? Scientific? historiography. 6) Popularization and scientometry: two unconnected modes of writing about the past? 7) Resetting the bar. What is a review, what is not and what is it for in the world. Seminars/Exercises: The content of the exercise is the work with specific texts, their analysis, contextualization and interpretation. Based on the study and joint reading of selected key texts in the field of the theory of historiography and narratology, the exercise will focus on textual analysis and subsequent discussions. Learning outcomes
|
The course will acquaint students with the main development trends, streams and schools of historic science in the 20th century, i.e. positivism and historicism, at first. The attention will concentrate on the methods of exploration claimed by modern historiography, on its methodological attitudes and teoretic constructs which exercise or influence. A part of course will be reading of texts.
It corresponds to the definition of the subject and to the demands given in syllabus.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Essay, Practical demonstration of acquired skills, Presentation of acquired experience via portfolio
Active participation in exercises (participation in the course discussion based on continuous reading of assigned texts) The course is not based on lectures, but rather on shared close-reading of selected texts and analysis of media formats. Credit essay: preparation of a credit essay based on individual reading of one book title from the field of professional historiography. The text in the range of 2-4 standard pages will be the original author's text without the use of AI-generated content (proofreading can be used), including citations of key passages of the source and standard note-taking. Deadline: 15. 12. 2025
