Course content
|
Lectures: 1) Concepts and history. Territories, methodologies and changes of concepts in contemporary historical science 2) Scientific community, scientometry and grant policy in theory and in practice 3) Horizon of experience and horizon of meaning; limits of interpretation, subjectivity and relativity of historical cognition 4) Culture and space as central themes and problems of contemporary historiography 5) Aesthetics and ethics as an integral part of historical work 6) Figuration of memory, culture of remembrance, trauma and gender as a problem of perspective 7) Landscape and memory I 8) Landscape and memory II Exercises: As part of the exercise, each student presents the result of reading partial passages of compulsory (or recommended) literature and suggests its application in historiographic or museological practice.

Learning outcomes
|
Building upon previous prerogative historiography courses, historical thinkingand its specific component, scientific inquirywill be hereby presented as a sociocultural phenomenon: that is, as the construction of an objectified worldview that encompasses evaluation and possesses aesthetic, ethical, and social dimensions. Through dialogue-oriented seminars, the course will introduce students to the fundamental forms and dilemmas of historical thinking and inquiry within historiography and related social sciences at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries. Students will also explore media presentation as well as the forms and challenges of popularization, with a specific focus on cultural heritage management, including museum and archival education. Furthermore, they will learn the basic principles of evaluating scholarly literature through the writing of a review (a course requirement is the submission of a review of a current historiographical work of the student's choice; see the "Requirements" section for details). Attention will also be devoted to grant applications and the associated procedures, particularlythough not exclusivelywithin the context of standard Czech Science Foundation (GAČR) projects.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral exam, Presentation of artistic and creative activities,
Active participation in the seminar discussion (exercise); continuous fulfillment of assigned tasks (reading reflection); studied mandatory literature. The course is not based on lectures, but rather on shared close-reading of selected texts and analysis of media formats. The condition for awarding credit is the preparation of a review of a selected current historiographic book, max. 2 years old. Deadline: 14. 12. 2026. The review in the range of 2-4 standard pages will be an author's original text without any use of AI (corrections applicable according to principles of AI use by American Historical Association). It will mainly contain a reflection on the author's, reader's, content and methodological level of the assessed text, according to the requirements discussed in the course. Ideally, the review should be publishable in the review section of one of the Czech professional periodicals (Fontes Nissae, Marginalia historica, H-O-P, etc.). The oral exam in individual or colloquial form will be based on self-evaluation, i.e. reflection on the pitfalls of the course, the literature read and the skills acquired in the course.
