Course content
Thematic areas: Familiarisation with geometric concepts taught in the 1st grade of elementary school from a didactic point of view, practical application of the geometry topics of the 1st grade of elementary school in teaching. 1. The subject of geometry didactics in relation to teaching in the 1st grade of elementary school. Different approaches to teaching geometry in the 1st grade of elementary school. 2. Didactic principles in the teaching of geometry in the 1st grade of elementary school - the principle of visuality. Models and didactic aids for teaching geometry. 3. Organizational forms of teaching geometry in the 1st grade of elementary school. Specifics of preparation for a geometry lesson. Changing forms of work. 4. Concept-forming process in geometry (introduction of geometric concepts in the 1st grade of elementary school). Symbolism used in geometry in the 1st grade of elementary school. 5. Construction problems, mathematisation process, phases and methods of solving construction problems. Methodological procedures. Practical use of symbolic and word notations, drawing tools and supplies. 6. Evaluation of pupils in geometry. Working with errors, inaccuracies in drawing and their possible causes. Preparation and creation of a geometry test. Correction of geometry problems solved by pupils of the 1st grade of elementary school. 7. Developing spatial visualisation. Non-standard tasks. Exercises: The exercises follow on from the previous week's lectures, practical applications and practice of the presented subject matter.

Learning activities and teaching methods

  • Class attendance - 28 hours per semester
  • Home preparation for classes - 14 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 14 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
There are introduced the basic concepts of geometry from a didactic point of view in the lectures, and there are shown their practical applications in the geometry curriculum of the 1st grade of elementary school in the exercises. Practical applications are based on the use of aids, educational models, 3D printed models, as well as commonly available board games and building blocks. The aim of the lectures and exercises is to familiarize students with the methodological procedures in teaching, working with teaching aids, but also with the creation of teaching aids, and above all with the use of geometry in practice. In the exercises, students are expected to be actively involved in the activities.
By completing the course, students will not only gain theoretical knowledge in the field of geometry didactics, but also primarily acquire practical skills, suitable methods, which they will use to advantage in their future practice when teaching geometry at the 1st grade of elementary school.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of elementary and secondary school geometry.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Oral presentation of self-study

Attendance at lectures and active participation in exercises, ongoing completion of assigned tasks and their subsequent presentation. Successful completion of the exam (presentation of a teaching sample of the assigned geometric topic taught at the 1st grade of elementary school).
