Course content
Lectures: 1) The principles and aims of textile maintenance, the symbols for textile maintenance treatment, the marking of textile materials 2) Basic properties of fibers in textile maintenance, chemical and mechanical changes of textiles in ageing, the identification of textile damage 3) Historical aspects of production and textile maintenance 4) Washing of textiles, principle, technology 5) Bleaching and fluorescent brightening of textiles, blueing of textiles 6) Drying and ironing of textiles 7) Chemical cleaning, ecological aspects of textile maintenance 8) Identification and elimination of spots 9) Summary and utilizing of natural dyes, synthetic dyes 10) Home dyeing and printing of textiles I 11) Home dyeing and printing of textiles II 12) The problems of dyeing fastness properties 13) Special textiles maintenance - new types of fibers and treatments, membranes 14) Renovation and conservation for museum application Laboratory : 1) Washing of textiles I 2) Washing of textiles II 3) Problems in textile maintenance I 4) Problems in textile maintenance I 5) Natural dyes 6) Textile coloration

Learning outcomes
Principal properties of fibers will be demonstrated on textile materials behavior on used textiles maintenance technologies. Students after pass this subject will able to understand the principles of all usual methods in textile maintenance in general technical and historical context. Part of lectures will be focused on the problems of color fastness, the marking of textile materials, chemical background of chemicals used in textile maintenance and basic properties of textile fibers. Students will be acquainted in details with these procedures: washing of textiles, chemical cleaning, identification and elimination of spots, bleaching of textiles, ironing, drying, home dyeing and printing textiles inclusive of natural dyes. In the framework of the subject will be lectured also historical aspects of production and textiles maintenance including their renovation and conservation for museum purpose.

Combined examination

The credit: Completion of all laboratory exercises. Defence of laboratory protocols. Semestral project The examination is composed of written and oral part.
