Course content
1. Rationalism and education. Empiricism and education. Critical rationalism and education - Descartes, Locke, Popper, Brezinka. 2. Humanism and education - Comenius, Pitter. 3. Evolution and education. Darwinism and social Darwinism. Eubotics and eugenics - Darwin, Durdík, Štorch and eubiotic farm. 4. Revolution, utopia and education - Plato, More, Bacon, Campanella, Owen, Fourier, Orwell. 5. Positivism and scientism in education. Progress and education. Science, technology and education - Comte, Spencer, Durkheim, Lindner, Kádner, Úlehla, Crumb, Masaryk, Thorndike, Příhoda. 6. Quantitative approaches and education, experiment and education, experimental pedagogy - Lay, Meumann, Čáda, Velinský, Stejskal. 7. Culture, spiritualism, rules and values in education - Durkheim, Dilthey, Flitner, Nohl, Spranger. 8. Nation and education. Ethnicity, race, eugenics - Herder, Fichte, Radl. Gobineau, Galton, Lenz, Krieck. 9. Citizen and education - Locke, Kant, Herbart, Dewey, Bláha. 10. Knowledge and education. Education as a mean of enlightenmnet. Tradition, modernity and education. The enlightenment and education - Locke, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Rousseau, Campe, Basedow, Felbiger, Seibt.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming)

Learning outcomes
The course presents to students chosen categories and concepts crucial to general pedagogical discussion in historical and present context of thinking.
After completion of the course student will be able: 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of Pedagogical concepts 1 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral paper 4. to apply gained knowledge in educational practice
Prerequisites
Student has basic knowledge of general pedagogy.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written assignment

Paper on the selected topic, active reading of the sources on the subject in the seminar, elaboration of the semester task.
