Course content
1. Psychological sciences and the subject of their research. Nomotic and idiographic approach to exploring the human psyche (advantages x disadvantages). Psychology conceived as a scientific discipline dealing with behavioral manifestations and their conditionality; psychology as a science of thought and experience. Main psychological directions and their insight into human psyche (major leaders: influence on the development of science). Psychological disciplines and their methods. 2. Psychics and its dimensions; psychic processes and conditions. Determination of human psyche - biological, environmental and socio-cultural; inner and outer. Perception (counters, perceptions, perceptual disorders); attention, imagination, memory (types of memory); thinking, language, speech. Emotionality of personality; emotions, emotional disorders. Temperament. Extraverts and introverts. 3. Cognitive processes. Learning and its assumptions; reflexes, instincts (meaning for humans); imprinting, classical conditioning, reinforcement, extinction, operative conditioning, observer learning, etc. Thinking operations. Problem solving. The relationship of thought and speech with Piaget and Vygotski. Intelligence: types of intelligence and their measurement. 4. Skills and interests. Motivational personality page. Motiv, target; instincts, needs, interests, aspirations; physiological, psychological and social needs as motivational factors. Will and self-control. Character - relationship attitudinal characteristics of personality. 5. Consciousness, its states and disorders. Me and self-understanding; feeling of integrity and continuity; Disorders of eating. Personality psychology - personality structure; different approaches to exploring the structure and personality development. Dynamic concept of personality. Socialization and its important factors; social processes: influence on personality development. Development of mental functions; developmental changes during lifetime (importance for pedagogical activities taking into account the possibilities and needs of children, pupils, students). Social interactions and communication (basic types of communication). Stages of human personality development - periodization. The importance of human freedom at Freud; Adler and Jung's contribution to psychoanalytic theory. Maslow's hierarchy of needs; the will to sense at Frankl. Tendency to self-update at Rogers. 6. Burden and stress, influence on the body, adaptation, resistance, resilience; consequences of severe or long-term stress. Mental disorders and illnesses; causes, possibilities of positive influence and prevention. 7. Ethical problems in psychology; issues of research on psychological phenomena and human behavior.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the basic concepts of psychology. The course helps student to gain a general orientation in psychological disciplines and the most influential theories about the essence of human experience, thinking and behavior.
After completion of the course student will be able: 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of General psychology for social workers 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral paper 4. to apply gained knowledge in social worker practice
Prerequisites
Student has basic knowledge of general psychology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Written assignment

Acquiring the credit is conditional on at least 75% attendance at the seminars and submission of a written paper on the possibilities of utilization of psychological knowledge by social worker acquired from at least two studied publications. The exam consists of a professional discussion on specific topics from the syllabus and the possible application of knowledge in the context of social worker practice.
