Course content
1. Socio-culturally disadvantaged environment, definition. Factors involved in socio-cultural disadvantages for children and youth in the Czech Republic (poverty, immigration, phenomenon of socially-excluded sites, racism). 2. Current trends in education of socio-culturally disadvantaged children and youth in the Czech Republic and in world (EU, USA). Concept of preparatory classes in the Czech Republic - basic idea, possible variants. Importance of preparatory classes for balancing opportunities in education for socio-culturally disadvantaged children. Analogous concepts in Head Start, and the No Child Left Behind (US) and their evaluation. 3. Practical importance of cooperation of school and social prevention of institutions providing services for children, youth and families with children (social counselling, youth clubs, social activating services, safety line). Cooperation with authority of socio-legal protection of children and youth (OSPOD). 4. Influence of cultural and ethnic specificities on value orientation and attitudes towards education. Cultural sensitivity of teacher. Hidden risk of "White Priviledge". Specifics of education of children from national and ethnic minorities living in the Czech Republic (Roma minority, Vietnamese minority). 5. Specifics of education of children of immigrants from the third world. Immigration policy x economics. Application model of Cristina Igoy for education of first generation children of imigrants.

Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming)

  • Preparation for credit - 12 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Emphasis will be placed on student's ability of self-reflection and work with own attitudes, stereotypes and prejudices.
After completion of the course student will be able: 1. to understand the content of prescribed curriculum of Education of children and youth with socio-cultural disadvantage 2. to reflect the topic critically 3. to demonstrate specific intellectual skills gained in a course in writing of a semestral paper 4. to apply gained knowledge in educational practice
Prerequisites
Student has basic knowledge of pedagogical psychology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written assignment

Active participation in seminars, seminar task (self-reflection of personal identity with focus on own cultural and racial identity).
