Course content
Thematic areas: 1. Education and humanity - Jan Amos Komenský and education as a means of reforming society. 2. The concept of verbal-illustrative teaching and its use in informal education. 3. Education and the emancipation of the individual - Enlightenment pedagogy in England (John Locke) and France (Jean Jacques Rousseau). 4. The principle of authority and freedom in education. Concepts of free education in informal education. 5. Education, schooling, and the modern (national) state. Philanthropists and the importance of so-called industrial education, usefulness, and utilitarianism in education and schooling. 6. Education, schooling, and the didactic system. Educational teaching using the example of J.F. Herbart 7. Education and progress. Positivism and education - H. Spencer, G.A.Lindner, J. Úlehla. 8. Experiment and pedagogy. Experimental pedagogy. Quantitative methods in pedagogy. Testing, education, and learning. 9. Action and education - American pragmatic education and American progressivism (John Dewey). 10. Society and education. Education for democracy. 11. Education as a philosophical or empirical science. 12. Experimental pedagogy and the clash of pedagogical concepts at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. 13. Free education, reform pedagogy at the beginning of the 20th century - origins, concepts, discourses. 14. 20th-century educational concepts applied in informal education.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The course provides a historical overview of the goals, processes, and methods of education in a broader sociological and pedagogical context. It focuses on issues of humanity in education, freedom and authority in education, the role of reason and the senses in historical reflections on education, concepts of progress and education, and, last but not least, the issue of educational reform as social reform. Outcomes - students will be able to discuss current problems and issues in pedagogical practice in a historical context and understand the temporal connections between current problems and their historical context. Students will gain a general overview of pedagogy.
