Course content
Principles of Scientific Work and the Purpose of Research in Educational Sciences: Working with academic literature, principles of scholarly writing (literature review, compilation, citations, and ethics). Basic, Applied, and Action Research: Information databases and resources in educational sciences (specificity of the thematic field). The teacher's role in educational research. Opportunities and Risks of Quantitative Research: Sample selection, tool construction, fieldwork, data collection, statistical processing, and result interpretation. Examples of quantitative studies and findings. Opportunities and Risks of Qualitative Research: Typological sampling, data collection, processing, and interpretation. Examples of qualitative research findings. Mixed Research Design: Requirements and possibilities. Examples of findings from mixed research methods. Basic Research Methods and Tools: Questionnaires, observation, case studies, content analysis, and the specificity of the research field. Issues related to data interpretation. International Educational Research Studies: PISA, TIMSS, PIAC, TALIS. The teacher's role in educational research.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The course acquaints students with the basic principles of scientific work and with the procedures and rules of creating their own scholar text, diploma thesis. The main topic of the course is pedagogical research (the specificity of research in educational sciences, possibilities, risks, research approaches, data interpretation, ethical level of research).

General orientation in the subject.

Assessment methods and criteria
Interview, Oral presentation of self-study, Presentation of student research activity

Preparation of a seminar/term paper, including: Analysis of a published research report, Thematic literature review related to the research, Design of a small-scale research project.
