Course content
1. Jan Amos Komenský and education as the correction of society. 2. Education during the Enlightenment in England (John Locke) and France (Jean J. Rousseau), the principle of authority and freedom in education. 3. German pedagogy of the 18th century, philanthropism and the path to the school system and compulsory school attendance. 4. System and education - J. F. Herbart. 5. Progress and education, positivism and education - H. Spencer, G. A. Lindner, J. Úlehla. 6. Action and education - American pragmatic education and American progressivism (John Dewey). 7. Experimental pedagogy and "concern for the child" at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. 8. Free education, reform pedagogy of the early 20th century - background, concepts, discourses. 9. Václav Příhoda and the principle of rationalization in education. 10. School reform between the wars in the Czechoslovakia.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Lecture, Practicum

  • Preparation for comprehensive test - 12 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The course acquaints with the historical view of the aims, processes and methods of education in the broader pedagogical context. In the foreground, there are the issues of humanity education, freedom and authority in education, the role of reason and senses in the historical reflection on education, the concepts of progress in education and, last but not least, the issue of reform of elementary or primary education and the reform of the school in general. Attention is also paid to the historical development and transformation of the teaching profession.
