Course content
Thematic headings: 1. Jan Amos Komenský and education as the correction of society. Humanity and education as the basis of modern education. J.A. Comenius and didactic principles of teaching for the primary level. 2. The principle of authority and freedom in education: the current theme of educating a democratic citizen in a broader perspective - acting reasonably (John Locke) and acting freely (J.J. Rousseau). 3. Compulsory education as a path to civic emancipation and national society: pedagogical and didactic principles of J.H. Pestalozzi's philanthropism and teaching, the origins of elementary/basic education. Girls' education and women teachers. 4. Activity-based learning, working school and the foundations of project-based learning: American pragmatic education and American progressivism (John Dewey), working school in the Czech pedagogical debate for primary education. 5. Sensomotor material and child development in the concept of M. Montessori; holistic child development and the concept of Waldorf pedagogy. 6. The reform of education at the first level - examples from the interwar period. Teaching outdoors and teaching "healthy" - physical, psychological and ethical principles in primary education (E. Štorch, F. Bakule, J. Úlehla, F.Mužík). 7. Education and education in unfreedom: education under the weight of totalitarianism, education in the Protectorate, educational and educational goals of primary education in the socialist school for 1948.

Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments), Lecture, Practicum

Learning outcomes
The course introduces a historical perspective on the aims, processes and methods of education and upbringing in a broader pedagogical context. At the forefront are questions of the humanity of education, freedom and authority in education, the role of reason and sense in historical reflection on education, concepts of progress in education, and last but not least, the question of elementary or primary education reform and school reform in general. Attention is also paid to the historical development and transformation of the teaching profession.
