Course content
Lectures: 1. Penology as a science. Theoretical concepts of the penalty, functions of penalties, principles of penalising, algorithm of penalising. 2. Prison service in the Czech Republic. The organization structure, and tasks. Conception of the prisoning until the 2025. Character of some of the functions and roles in the prison service. 3. Ethical principles of the treatment in prisons, European rules. Custody and imprisoning in some of the European countries. 4. Custody - the position of the accused, legislation, psychic and social consequences of custody. Helping professionals in prisons. 5. Imprisoning - internal and external differentiation of the convicted, treatment programs (kinds, principles, the importance of work). 6. The tasks of the warden, the educator, tutor, therapist, social worker when working with the convicted. Negative issues inside prisons - problems of the second life of the imprisoned. 7. Cooperation between the NGO sector and probation and mediation service in the CR. Cooperation with the families of the imprisoned. Introduction to post-penitentiary care. Seminars: 1. The ways of treating the imprisoned - methods, forms. Case study seminar. 2. The ways of treating the imprisoned on specialized units of the prisons and drug free zones (methods, forms, tools. Case study seminar. 3. The ways of treating the imprisoned with drug issues (methods, forms etc.). Case study seminar. 4. The ways of treating the imprisoned with personal disorders (methods, forms). Case study seminar. 5. The ways of treating the imprisoned with mental retardation and paraphilia (methods, forms etc.). Case study seminar. 6. The ways of treating the imprisoned with the youth (method, forms etc.). Case study seminar. 7. Final reflection of the course, semester test.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monological explanation (lecture, presentation,briefing), Dialogue metods(conversation,discussion,brainstorming), Self-study (text study, reading, problematic tasks, practical tasks, experiments, research, written assignments), Written assignment presentation and defence

Learning outcomes
Students learn the basic penology terminology and how to use it correctly. Students also learn how to apply this terminology into the social work practise.
