Course content
Lectures: 1. Basic quantities of structure and mechanics of fibers and fiber assemblies. (Fiber fineness, cross-section, equivalent diameter, shape factor, specific surface. Fiber packing density and its interpretation, etc. Average parameters of fiber blends.) 2. Porosity and equivalent pore diameter in general fiber assemblies. (Surface area per unit volume, porosity, equivalent pore diameter and length of pores, pores with constant shape factor, constant length, and empirically generalized pores, application for wicking in textiles, and flow of fluids, comparison with experiment.) 3. Strength of fiber bundle from two components. (Hamburger method, conditions of bundle reinforcement.) Compression of fiber material. (Idea van Wyka and its generalization - only for guidance) 4. Staple yarns and filament yarns. (Fineness, substance cross-section and substance diameter, number of fibers in cross-section, coefficient kn, twist intensity, twist multipliers, Koechlin's concept of suitable twisting and yarn diameter.) 5. Helical model of yarns. (Helical and ideal helical model, number of fibers and coefficient kn for different technologies, yarn retraction, saturated twist and twist of second order.) 6. Yarn mechanics. (Gegauff's model of tensioning of twisted yarns, comparison with Hearle's experiments, problem of fictional forces, semi-empirical model of Solovjev for staple yarns.) 7. Basic quantities of woven fabrics, definitions and relations. (Crossing of yarns in woven fabrics, crossing factors, coverings, cover-factors and their relations to coverings, warp and weft crimping, areal mass of fabrics.) 8. Model of woven fabric according Peirce. (Interpretation possibilities of geometry of woven fabric, definition of Peirce's model, geometrical parameters and their relations, relative wave heights, crimping of yarns according Peirce's model, thickness of fabric.) 9. Some special cases of Peirce's model. (roughly only.) 10. Basic quantities and relations of knitted fabrics. (Row and column density, pitches of rows and columns, structural unit, length l of loop, estimative determination of covering according the ration l/d.) One simple model of loop. (Geometrical relations, relative pitches of rows, and columns, and length of loop, calculation of length of loop, limit pitches of rows, and columns, and loop length, technologically regular parameters.) 11. Covering of knitted fabrics. (Geometry of yarn covering in knitted fabric, model calculation of covering, comparison with ratio l/d, technological area of use.) Straining of knitted fabrics - roughly only. 12. Overview of some other textile structures. (Indicative only - optional) Seminaries: Exercises with their contents follow up on the lecture - the subject is taught at the lecture. Exercises also complement lectures. Students modify the resulting relations from lectures to appropriate physical dimensions, use them to determine important variables, and gain a basic idea of the order of the evaluated properties of textile units. In this context, they also receive further information on technological connections and risks.

Learning outcomes
In this course, students learn the basic areas of structure and properties of textiles according to the theme, mentioned in the lists of lectures.
Student orientates himself in problem area of structure and properties of textiles.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of mathematics, mechanics and textile technologies in range of basic university courses.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam, Student's performance analysis

Direct teaching: Credit: successfully written credit test Exam: The examination is oral in this topic. Student can use all arbitrary study-materials by preparation time before oral examination as well as by examination. Student must demonstrate very good understanding of all theoretical models, incl. ways of mathematical derivations, by discussion with examiner. Indirect teaching: Credit: Correctly calculated all sent examples. Exam: oral on-line.
